Sign Language
New Horizon Academy is proud to be one of the first early childhood programs to incorporate sign language into our infant curriculum. We have chosen Joseph Garcia’s Sign with your Baby learning kit as a resource for introducing sign language. Our caregivers talk to the infants and toddlers while teaching the signs. The combination of the spoken word along with the gesture of the sign provides the optimum setting for learning.Research indicates that infants have control over their hands long before they develop the fine motor skills required for speech. It has also proven that teaching infants to sign increases their IQ and enables them to talk at an earlier age. Other significant benefits include minimized stress and frustration for both infants and caregivers. Sign language provides an excellent bridge to verbal communication. Through simple signs, our infants and toddlers are able to communicate their wants, needs, and observations in a manner that adults clearly understand.
