Camp Discovery Summer Camp
Welcome to Camp Discovery!The 2013 summer program at New Horizon Academy, Camp Discovery, is your child's passport to a summer of fun, friends, and field trips. We have created the most fun-filled, action-packed summer program based on our 40+ years of experience with young children and school-age children who are on summer vacation. A new theme each month challenges kids through experiments, special projects, games, crafts, and stories from around the world. Our summer activities will develop your child's intellect, social skills, creative thought, and most importantly, self-esteem.
Infants – 5 Years
During the summer months, all of our programs continue to offer our award-winning curriculum. The program is enhanced with special activities and visitors. You never know who might make a guest appearance at our center this summer! It might be an athlete, a zookeeper, a juggler, a magician, or even a local hero. With these and other hands-on activities, children will enjoy the summer while building on what they learned throughout the year.
6 - 12 Years
With several fieldtrips each week and planned activities all throughout the day, your children will stay engaged and active during the long days of summer.
Summer at New Horizon Academy provides your child a safe environment to learn, play, and explore during those otherwise long summer days. Camp Discovery programs are led by teachers trained in safety, early education, compassion, and fun. Children are able to construct their own knowledge through themed fun learning experiences that include fieldtrips, community projects, sports and recreation, cooking and baking, arts and crafts, drama, gardening, guest speakers, science experiments, water play, and much, much, more. With these and other hands-on activities, children will enjoy the summer while building on what they learned throughout the year.

Camp Discovery Summer Themes
Camp Champions
The development of good habits now will lead to a lifetime of healthy living. During Camp Champions, we will exercise our bodies with yoga, learn to play new sports, take part in challenging competitions, and participate in a wide variety of recreational activities We will also explore the world of food and healthy eating, and we will prepare some delicious snacks to take with us on our adventures. A visit to an area sports complex might be on the agenda, along with tours of restaurants and grocery stores to learn more about the origin and preparation of our food. We will become champions at taking good care of ourselves, and we will have a great time doing it!
Camp Creators
Our imaginations are unlimited when it comes to creativity. Watch our galleries grow throughout the summer as we create masterpieces and explore a variety of mediums. We will paint, draw, take photos, make mosaics or baskets, and even develop our engineering skills by building a city! We can’t wait to showcase our creative talents!
Camp Explorers
We will explore parks and nature centers and learn about natural resources, vegetation, and all things outdoors. Watch our green thumbs in action as we grow our own garden this summer. We may go on a fishing expedition, visit a local nursery, or have some special guests help us with our gardens. We can hardly wait to learn all about the outdoors and go on our many adventures!
Camp Imagination
We will learn all about media and use our imaginations to make our own TV show, game show, or even do a class newspaper. We will go on some media adventures by visiting a TV station, a newspaper office, or maybe even the post office to learn how things get from here to there. Near the end of the summer, we will showcase our talents and present a talent show for our family and friends!
Camp Inventors
Will we create a volcano and then watch it erupt? Or, will we study the effects of gravity? We may decode secret messages or do science experiments using all-natural materials, or we may visit a museum to see how things work. Maybe we will even design and build a robot! There are unlimited areas for experimentation, and we are ready for the challenge. You will see evidence of our experiments displayed in our classroom throughout the summer.
Camp Water Adventures
Warm weather means outdoor fun with water! We might visit an area splash pad, or we could convert our playground to a water park. We will visit nature centers and aquariums and explore water as a home to many types of aquatic life. Maybe we will build our own aquarium! Stay tuned to see what we come up with this summer….and don’t forget your towel!
Camp Discovery Summer Book Club

Children will read all summer long and earn Book Bucks for every 100 minutes they read. All children who earn Book Bucks will be able to purchase reading prizes with the “money” they earned as a reward for being a star reader. Children will also write and illustrate books about our summer adventures, visit the library, and participate in other activities that support the development of reading skills all while having fun! At the end of the summer, we will have a Reading Celebration. Top readers will be awarded fabulous prizes!
